General descriptionThe closeness of the border and the Danube river has always determined the life and the unique structure of the town. The parts of Komárom are: Szőny (Brigetio) which used to be a strategic center of the ancient Pannonia province, and Koppánymonostor which is famous for its natural beauty and the Benedictine Monastery destroyed in the time of Turkish occupation. The main attraction of Komárom is the medicinal water that is rich in minerals and constitutes the basis of the bathing and medical complex which invites guests to recover or refresh all the year round. The most famous sight of the town is the fortification system which is unparalleled in Europe. The parts of this system in Hungary are: Star fortress, Igmándi fortress and Fort Monostor. Despite its gigantic size this fort system is uniform regarding both the architecture and the building materials. The top level of the forts has already sunk down to the ground level so it is covered with trees and wild flowers as part of the nature.

Monostori Erõd (Fort Monostor)

Category,
DescriptionFort Monostor at Komárom is the largest military fortress of the 19th century in Central Europe, built by the Austrian Empire. As an important element of the Komárom defensive line protecting the Danube and Vienna, the fortress was built after the defeat of the 1848-49 Hungarian Revolution and Independence War. The complex system of strange buildings, bastions, sophisticated trenches and well hidden gun-shelters shows the highest military technology of its age. Nearly 30.000 sqm underground spaces around an immense courtyard could shelter, feed and treat many thousands of soldiers for a long time. The Fort had never been fought in battel. After WW II., it was occupied by the Soviet Army and used as a munition magazine. Follownig the whitdrawal of the Soviet troops in 1990, this outstanding historic monument of the military architecture was open to the public. To exploit the unique architectural spaces and the favourable location, a developement project for a regional cultural-tourist attraction was started in 2000. The groups of visitors are guided through the maze of barracks, training-halls, bakery, hospital, stables, remises, cannon-bases, tunnels and other surprising places. A small museum provides better understanding of the Komárom fortification system.
