General description | Linz, Hostess of Europe Linz, the city on the Danube, has become the pulsating centre between East and West during the last decades. A unique interplay of culture, industry and nature, combined with Austrian hospitality, gives the city its exceptional vitality. The year 2009 is a very special one for Linz: The capital of Upper Austria will be European Capital of Culture. Today already numerous events are taking place so that you can anticipate what will happen in this coming Cultural Capital year. Linz is Culture The city is a stage for art and culture, all year long. Music, theatre, movies and art – old classics to Media Art - , Linz is open, innovative and varied; a city that has something to offer for any taste. Linz offers experience The metropolis on the Danube can be experienced best by walking through the city. There is so much to see. The main square, impressing by its size, invites you to a chat in one of the comfortable open-air restaurants and cafés in summer and to a stroll through the Advent market in winter. Don’t miss the Pöstlingberg, the mountain in the north of Linz, with its baroque Pilgrimage church, the Grottenbahn, and a fantastic view over the city. Or the Landstraße and its side lanes, with elegantly decorated shops, three down-town shopping malls, from flagship stores of international brands to small stores for tasting and browsing. Afterwards comfortable restaurants and cafés invite you to enjoy one of the various culinary highlights of the city. For example, a piece of Linzer Torte. This sweet titbit has been seducing people for more than 300 years now. Linz changes This is not only a slogan of the city, it is real: Linz is striving for the new and is transferring this ambition. No Austrian city has changed as much as Linz during the last decades. Linz of today is a modern city full of impetus with high living quality. This change is reflected in all of the city’s past, present and future. Be that in the romantic corners and narrow lanes and on historic places that can tell many stories about the vivid past of the city, or in the interesting new buildings of appealing architectural styles. Just like the newly-built Museum of the Future – the Ars Electronica Center – or the new south wing of the Schlossmuseum (Museum in the Castle of Linz) that allows the visitor to enjoy an extensive view over the city. These modern buildings will be opened in the Cultural Capital year and they will fit perfectly into the cityscape of Linz. |

Highlights im Jahresprogramm (Highlights)
Category | , , , |
---|---|
Description | The visitors can enjoy numerous events all around the year, for example, passion concerts in churches at Easter time, or the OMV Linz Danube Marathon, the fastest Austrian marathon, in April. www.linz-marathon.at During the summer months there is an open-air event almost every day, like the comedy shows and theatre performances at the Rosengarten on the Pöstlingberg, the streets artists festival (www.pflasterspektakel.at) with more than 600 international artists at the end of July, the Ars Electronica Festival (www.aec.at) and the Bruckner Festival (www.brucknerfest.at) in September, as well as the marvellous “Klangwolke” (“Cloud of Sound”) (www.klangwolke.at) with a composition of fire and music in the Danube park. From mid-November until Christmas the inner city changes into an enchanting city of cribs, with hundreds of cribs in shopping windows, churches and other public places. The Advent season also offers traditional Christmas markets at the main square, at the Volksgarten and at some other small charming places. An old Swiss craft has been rediscovered for this special time of the year – create your own Christmas gift with a self-dipped candle made of real beeswax. There are also concerts and choir evenings in different churches and at the Brucknerhaus, which will bring the spirit of Christmas to you. Attractive Advent packages offer a combination of a weekend stay in a 3- or 4-star-hotel combined with supporting program. www.advent.linz.at In December 2008 there will be 31 windows on the advent calendars and five candles instead of the usual four on the Advent wreath. Therefore we will have our eyes not only on Christmas and Hanukkah, but also on the beginning of the special cultural year of our capital. To shorten the waiting, Linz09 will offer quite a lot. During the winter months exhibitions, concerts, cabarets or special guided tours with great weekend packages can be experienced. It’s a real alternative for those who are not really into winter sports. Find more information on: www.kulturwinter.linz.at. |

Linz09 (Linz09 )
Category | , , , , , , , , , , |
---|---|
Description | In 1985, the European Union began naming a city to serve for a year as the continent’s Capital of Culture. Since 2005, this annual title has been bestowed simultaneously on two or more cities. Linz will be sharing 2009 honours with Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Linz is already looking forward to serving as Europe’s official host for an entire year! And our visitors can look forward to a diverse and innovative array of cultural events presented throughout our city and our region. The Linz09 lineup includes several themes: the city of Linz, its history and future as well as Europe and the world will have a share in the programme. Linz has been developing into an extraordinary prototype of the modern European city—a technology- and knowledge-based urban industrial centre that takes culture and the business of staging a cultural calendar equally seriously, and, at the same time, places tremendous value on ecologically-oriented quality of life. Thus, interlinking industry, culture and nature is of particular interest to Linz09. This is precisely why our aim is to make Linz Austria's most interesting city, not only in 2009 but more than ever in the years that follow. |
